Tra coloro che lo odiano c'è il miliardario Bruce Wayne, di Gotham City, il quale da vent'anni combatte i criminali della sua città con l'alter ego del giustiziere mascherato Batman. Bruce considera l'alieno responsabile dell'ecatombe di cittadini di Metropolis, avvenuta 1. Zod. Quel giorno, infatti, Bruce era presente durante la battaglia, e tra le macerie si prodigava cercando di salvare quante più persone possibili (tra cui un suo dipendente della Wayne Enterprises, Wallace Keefe, il quale ha perso le gambe nel caos generatosi). Contemporaneamente Superman, sotto l'identità di Clark Kent, giornalista del Daily Planet, è intenzionato a smascherare Batman, in quanto non ha mai condiviso i suoi metodi da brutale vigilante, nonostante il suo capo, Perry White, gli intimi di lasciar perdere. Corp, il giovane e mentalmente instabile Lex Luthor, è convinto che l'alieno sia una minaccia per l'umanità. Lex cerca quindi frammenti di kryptonite, una speciale roccia che indebolisce e danneggia i kryptoniani, trovandone il pezzo più grande nell'Oceano indiano, tra i resti della macchina terraformante di Zod: tutto ciò al fine di uccidere Superman. Lex, tuttavia, viene ostacolato dalla Senatrice June Finch, che vorrebbe processare Superman. Ad ogni modo, Luthor ottiene comunque la kryptonite e il cadavere di Zod (corrompendo un politico vicino alla Finch), al fine di usare il DNA dell'alieno morto per creare un'arma biologica, da utilizzare come deterrente contro Superman. Poco tempo dopo, tuttavia, Diana, non essendo riuscita ad aprire i file di Lex protetti da una crittografia complessa, li riconsegna a Wayne, il quale scopre che lei è una metaumana immortale e che ha combattuto nella prima guerra mondiale. Oltre a lei ci sono i dati di altri metaumani dotati di super poteri, tra cui Superman (gli altri sono Flash, Aquaman e Cyborg). Bruce, mentre analizza i dati al computer, ha improvvisamente una visione distopica nella quale si ritrova in uno scenario post- apocalittico e Superman è impazzito, instaurando una dittatura, al comando di un esercito di umani fanatici che lo venerano e combattono sotto la sua insegna. Unico a combatterlo è lo stesso Batman, a capo di un pugno di disperati partigiani. Nel sogno, i ribelli, alla ricerca della kryptonite, vengono traditi e massacrati, e Bruce assiste impotente all'intervento da parte di un esercito di alieni insettoidi, i Parademoni di Darkseid, il quale probabilmente ha invaso la terra e controlla anche la mente di Superman (si scorge anche il grande simbolo Omega di Darkseid nel deserto). Sempre in questa visione, Bruce viene imprigionato e Superman lo uccide, sfondandogli il petto e facendo un riferimento alla morte di una donna a lui molto cara (Lois Lane). Alla morte di Batman nell'incubo, segue il risveglio di Bruce nella vita reale, il quale riceve una breve visita da parte di Flash[3], venuto dal futuro per avvisarlo del fatto che lui aveva ragione su Superman, il quale sarebbe impazzito a causa della morte di Lois. L'incubo non era altro che il futuro e Flash, tornando indietro, ne ha modificato gli eventi. Alfred cerca di dissuadere Bruce dal combattere contro Superman, ritenendolo un suicidio, ma Batman va avanti per la sua strada e tenta di rubare la kryptonite, con l'ausilio della Batmobile, agli uomini di Lex ma, dopo un lungo inseguimento, il Cavaliere Oscuro viene fermato da Superman, che gli intima di ritirarsi dall'attività di vigilante mascherato.

Successivamente, la senatrice Finch ordina a Superman di presentarsi al Congresso per appurare definitivamente, nell'inchiesta sui fatti accaduti in Africa (che si scoprono essere sempre parte del diabolico piano di Luthor) e sulle azioni incontrollate di Superman, se egli sia una minaccia o meno, ma Lex, che ha messo una bomba nella sedia a rotelle elettrica di Wallace Keefe (anch'egli presente per testimoniare contro Superman), uccide tutti i presenti, camuffando il fattaccio come un attentato terroristico kamikaze dello sfortunato dipendente della Wayne Enterprises.

Despite Supergirl's continued popularity and status as a central member of the "Superman Family", the editors at DC Comics and the creators of the maxi- series decided to kill Supergirl off during the Crisis.

According to Marv Wolfman, writer of Crisis on Infinite Earths: Before Crisis it seemed that half of Krypton had survived the explosion. We had Superman, Supergirl, Krypto, the Phantom Zone criminals, the bottle city of Kandor, and many others. Our goal was to make Superman unique.
